Nonprofits with their own Endowments

…in their own words

Greater Charleston YWCA
When Mae Purcell left funds in her will to the Greater Charleston YWCA in 1984, the organization was very poor. There were bills to pay, but (former) Executive Director Christine Jackson believed that the “best way to continue a living legacy to Mae, who walked here every day from Rutledge Avenue to volunteer, was to establish an endowment in her name.”

Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding
Helen Warren, a member of the board of the Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding (CATR), spear-headed the creation of the organization endowment for CATR.

“It sent an important message to the community that we’re going to be here,” said Executive Director, Murray Neale, who has found donors eager to support operating costs through the endowment.

John Ancrum SPCA
For Charles Karesh, the endowment at CCF provides “an important link with an established organization (CCF) that has credentials in the areas of fostering philanthropy and money management.”

When a disabled child gets on top of a horse, all kinds of muscles begin to work effortlessly. The Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding program makes critical therapy loads of fun.
