Nonprofit groups in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties
Grants of up to $10,000 are available annually to nonprofit organizations addressing charitable programs in certain targeted areas. Deadline: October 2008

The Beaufort Fund
Nonprofit groups in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton or Jasper Counties
Grants of up to $15,000 are available annually to nonprofit organizations addressing all charitable areas. Deadline: August 22, 2008

Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation
Georgetown County citizens
The mission of the Bunnelle Foundation is to improve the quality of life for Georgetown County citizens by focusing on causes consistent with Mrs. Bunnelle’s values, with an emphasis on:

  • Meeting basic human needs
  • Addressing the root causes of poverty
  • Advancing equitable economic growth and environmental conservation; and
  • Encouraging positive youth development.

Charles Webb - Ed Croft Endowment (call 723-3635 to apply)
Selected nonprofit organizations serving children with special needs in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester Counties
Grants generally ranging from $3,000-$10,000 are available annually to benefit children (0-18 years with an emphasis on 0-6) with special needs (disabled mentally or physically).

Cooper River Bridge Run Fund

Charitable organizations in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties

A number of donors have established "donor-advised" funds within CCF and make recommendations from time to time as to grants which they would like the Board to consider for approval. Most donor-advisors do not invite unsolicited requests. Those who do are listed on these pages. No Unsolicited Requests

DonorsChoose/ Teacher Grants
Public school educators throughout South Carolina
CCF is partnering with the national nonprofit DonorsChoose to increase funding for teacher-initiated classroom projects. Teachers post proposals on the DonorsChoose website, so donors can fund those they find most appealing to them. No Deadline. Applications are accepted year-round at www.donorschoosesc.org

Expansion Arts Fund
New and emerging artists and arts groups, with an emphasis on rural and minority talent, throughout CCF's service area.
Awards of up to $2,500 (Individuals) and $5,000 (Organizations), are available every two years depending upon geographical residence.  Having given 2006-2007 grants in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper Counties, the program will next benefit artists and arts groups in Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, and Georgetown counties. Deadline: Projected December 2008

Michael & Donna Griffith Lowcountry Artist's Award
Visual artists in Charleston County who are fine art sculptors or who work in oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels or drawing.
One award of $5,000 will be made to a visual artist who is a resident of Charleston County to provide funding to support the artist during the creation of a work of art that reflects or depicts "the look and feel" of the Lowcountry.

Provides grants for programs that aim to eliminate prejudice. The Fund's current focus is on programs which address prejudice related to sexual orientation.

Various nonprofit organizations
Makes grants for programs which help to eliminate inequities in the lives of women, primarily in the Lowcountry. The Fund's current focus is on programs which address prejudice related to sexual orientation.

Lowcountry Conservation Loan Fund (call 723-3635 to apply)

Land conservation organizations working in Allendale , Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry, and Jasper counties.
The Fund, established with generous donations from the Merck Family Foundation and the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, provides low-cost, interim financing to pre-approved nonprofit conservation organizations to protect lands with significant ecological, wildlife, scenic and recreational value. Loans of up to $500,000 with repayment of up to two years may be used for a variety of purposes related to land acquisition.

Any nonprofit organization in Charleston, Berkeley or Dorchester Counties
Grants of up to $10,000 are available annually to selected nonprofit organizations for projects designed to enhance the arts, education, the environment, health, human needs or community development.

REALTORS Housing Opportunities Fund

Nonprofit groups in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester Counties that focus on affordable housing. 

Grants of $500 - $3,000 are available during spring, summer, fall, and winter cycles, to assist in the education, development, maintenance or repair of housing.

Deadliine for 2008:  March 31st, June 30th, September 30th, and December 30th.

Saul Alexander Foundation (call 723-3635 to apply)
Jewish and nonprofit groups in Charleston County and based in Summerville, SC
An affiliate foundation of CCF, the Saul Alexander Foundation trustees recommend grants of $500 to $5,000 to be made each year, with 50% going to Jewish causes, 15% to Summerville causes, and the remainder to other nonprofit groups. Deadline: September 2008, by invitation only


Scholarship Funds
Various students
Several donors have established funds which provide annual scholarships to high school seniors. While some funds are open to all, others solicit requests from students with particular majors or from particular geographical areas. Awards range generally from $500 to $5,000. Deadline: March 20, 2008

The N.E.W. Fund (Neighborhoods Energized to Win)

Low-to-moderate income neighborhood groups in Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, and Dorchester counties

Awards of up to $2,500 are available this year on a competitive basis for low/moderate-income neighborhood groups. The grants, available because of contributions from area businesses, individuals and governments, are used to address key issues in the neighborhoods and to strengthen the leadership skills of neighborhood residents.

Winthrop Family Allendale/ Hampton Fund
Nonprofit groups in Allendale and Hampton Counties
Grants of up to $10,000 are available annually to nonprofit organizations addressing all charitable areas, with particular attention to education, health and conservation/preservation of the built and natural environment.

Women Making a Difference Fund (WMD) (call 723-3635 to apply)
Grants of up to $10,000 are available to nonprofit organizations in Charleston County whose work is consistent with WMD's mission of addressing the well-being of women and children in Charleston County. Applications are accepted only from organizations nominated by a member of Women Making a Difference.

Deadline: August 2008 by invitation only.

For the past 20 years, SC Environmental Law Project has protected the natural environment of SC by providing legal services and advice to environmental organizations and concerned citizens, and by working to improve the state's system of environmental regulation. Here SCELP Director Jimmy Chandler visits Wedgefield Plantation in Georgetown County to avert plans to dredge canals and place dredge spoil material in 12.8 acres of vegetated wetlands adjacent to the Black River.
