Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation (FPB) (2000) - Mrs. Frances P. Bunnelle created the Bunnelle Foundation prior to her death in 2000 in order to support charitable causes serving Georgetown County. (See below and to the right - Announcement and Timeline of Community Grant opportunity for 2008).
Mrs. Bunnelle believed that people should care for one another according to their means, and she quietly gave assistance to the disenfranchised and the disadvantaged. She valued the quality of life in Georgetown County, and she believed in the importance of “community”.
In a letter, she stated her intent for her Foundation:
“I have been involved in charitable giving throughout my life. Along the way, I have learned that the world’s needs are unlimited. Therefore, in order to have an impact in some lasting and meaningful way, I have tried to focus my efforts on Georgetown County.”
The mission of the Foundation is: To improve the quality of life for Georgetown County citizens by focusing on causes consistent with Mrs. Bunnelle’s values, with emphasis on:
- Meeting basic human needs;
- Addressing the root causes of poverty;
- Advancing equitable economic growth, environmental conservation; and,
- encouraging positive youth development.
It was the donor’s hope that the Foundation would not only address current needs, but also focus on underlying problems that are causing inequities between the County’s citizens: The Foundation’s strategic giving plan is designed to do just that. The Bunnelle Foundation’s strategic giving for 2005-2007 is in place and focuses on encouraging positive youth development.
During her life, Mrs. Bunnelle gave spontaneously, generously, and always anonymously to local charities. Among her favorites were the Saint Frances Animal Center, Tidelands Community Hospice and Tara Hall Home for Boys. Those three charities will continue to receive outright gifts and support from the Foundation for the foreseeable future, although the Foundation's support does not preclude the need for these organizations to continue to raise money from other sources.
