Saul Alexander Foundation (1997) was established at CCF by the trustees to manage assets and assist with grantmaking. The Saul Foundation has been awarding grants since 1952 when a trust was established upon the death of Saul Alexander, a humble Russian Ukraine immigrant, who arrived penniless in America at the age of 16 and became the successful owner of his own drygoods store in Summerville. Since 1986 alone, SAF has granted more than $2 million to the community.
Mission: To provide grants in the areas and proportions stipulated by Mr. Alexander in his will – 50% to Jewish causes; 15% to charitable causes in Summerville; and 35% to general charitable causes in Charleston County and Summerville.
Trustees: Gary C. Banks, Jr. (Chair), Charles Karesh, Henry B. Smythe, Jr., Melvin Solomon, Theodore S. Stern and Anita Zucker.
Associates: Thomas P. Anderson, Leah Greenberg and George Tupper.
Grantmaking: Grant support has consistently been given to local synagogues, Addlestone Hebrew Academy, Charleston Jewish Community Center, Charleston Jewish Federation, Charleston Jewish Social Services, and the Jewish Studies Center; as scholarship support to local colleges and universities; to local libraries; and generally as modest grants in support of the arts, the environment, health and recreation, basic human needs, and community development in Summerville and Charleston.
