A Good Life Begins with a Good Education

Juanita Brown is a Charleston native with a long history of public service. A distinguished teacher of biomedical science for gifted high school students through the Medical University of SC, she also taught sciences at several Charleston area public schools.

Her husband, William Melvin Brown, Jr. was a high school teacher and an insurance agent before founding American Development Corporation, a defense manufacturer in North Charleston. He often said that his entrepreneurial success was due in large part to his solid parochial education at Charleston’s Immaculate Conception High School.

Both of them knew what a difference a good education had made in their lives. And they also knew how valuable that opportunity would be for others, so it was fitting that, upon Melvin’s death in 1994, Juanita created the William Melvin Brown, Jr. Scholarship Fund in his honor.

Today that scholarship helps deserving African-American students attend colleges like Howard University, Trident Technical College, Gallaudet University, UNC – Chapel Hill, the College of Charleston and others. The Fund has also helped Roman Catholic, African–American students attend Bishop England High School and Charleston Catholic School.
